Wood & The Sub-Mariner: WRITING for the 1965 Namor Launch: Other
than his humourous take-offs, Wood’s best-known Sub-Mariner work is his
classic in Daredevil #7 (April 1965). But few knew that Wood’s Daredevil
vs The Sub-Mariner was to springboard the premier of Namor's own
feature in Tales to Astonish, beginning in issue #70, Aug. 1965. Here,
we see a few of Wood's WRITING notes for the Sub-Mariner feature
including a take-off on John Carter of Mars; epic Namor vs Th
e
Hulk (Wood planned it years before Marvel did it); Namor in a "Lost
World" with dinosaurs; a Namor vs Human Torch battle; etc. But before
Wood’s new Namor series began, Wood left Marvel over the "Marvel Method"
of artists not being paid for writing, so he took his new characters,
The T.H.U.N.D.E.R. Agents, to where they did pay him to write. Marvel
went forward and launched Namor by Gene Colan. Wood associate Adkins
worked on the series including the Wood-ish cover to #94. Wood’s concept
of an epic Namor vs. Hulk battle finally took place in Astonish #100
(Feb 1968) by Wood associates Marie Severin & Adkins.
Roy Thomas
joined Marvel just after Wood left but, he recalled in Alter Ego Vol.3
#8, that he heard talk that: “Wally was slated to go from Daredevil [#7
with Sub-Mariner, April 1965] onto the then-up-coming ‘Sub-Mariner’ solo
series in Tales to Astonish [#70, Aug. 1965]” — ROY THOMAS
